We just planned a student clean-up day, and one the places we considered was the river you're talking about. Final choice was to take them to the outskirts of UB where it's more countryside-ish. Sadly, the places in this city that need clean-up are endless.Melaniehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01120291136467100856noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-947416764841561265.post-24361392254226211902011-04-23T01:53:37.459-07:002011-04-23T01:53:37.459-07:00where is it possible to get these speakers' pu...where is it possible to get these speakers' publications?juandihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10471277645622384357noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-947416764841561265.post-68963246692963929142011-01-03T23:56:33.394-08:002011-01-03T23:56:33.394-08:00Could you please indicate some online resources fo...Could you please indicate some online resources for the study of Mongolian that are free of charge and available to everyone? I actually struggled a bit about ...Definitely true. I actually struggled a bit about what to call those groups. In Mongolian they call themselves хөдөлгөөнийхөн. How might you interpret this? "Movement" is a rather blunt way to do it, but it doesn't quite capture their essence. In fact, it makes them sound a bit more exalted and larger than they really are. I also am not a huge fan of the term "special interest," because as you point out in mining politics the mining companies are a special interest, too. Maybe in the future I should call them "Special Interest Civil Movements."

Not sure about when the agreement will be available. This morning we were commenting in the office how little news there is available about the deal. One might assume there is a top-down attempt to suppress the news, but I think it actually might be a collective desire to not jinx it by talking about it. In other words, no one except a very small minority wants to talk about it in fear of things falling through and disappointment reigning once again. I think it may be a society wide attempt to avoid some kind of deal closing curse.Brian White, ACMS US Directorhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05016084281639282851noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-947416764841561265.post-7885581432352476742009-07-08T08:45:34.314-07:002009-07-08T08:45:34.314-07:00For what it's worth, the mining industry is it...For what it's worth, the mining industry is itself a "special interest."

But I'll still be glad to see the agreement finished. It was late August and after traveling 18 hours to get to our new home, we found no hot water for showers. It took about 10 minutes of running the water to get the rust out of the pipes and alas, cold, dirty & smelly water began to appear. I learned to thank God for many things I had previously taken for granted.Barbiehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12326356628827230381noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-947416764841561265.post-82290251458012421472009-06-22T04:59:11.052-07:002009-06-22T04:59:11.052-07:00"This summer ritual is a curious aspect of th..."This summer ritual is a curious aspect of the heating and water systems constructed under the Soviet-style centralized economic model."

I think it is an aspect of Soviet design rather than of a Soviet-style central planning economy. Past experience and performance should not make supporters of the new president too sanguine, though.

Sitting back and waiting for Obama to mess up is not a very good strategy for his rivals, because he keeps proving time and again that he is exceptionally talented as a politician. Sitting back is like giving him license to control the debate, so the Republicans have erratically and disjointedly gone on the offensive, only making themselves less popular. That same sort of talent will need to show through with the new president in order to foment pressure on MPRP to go on the offensive in ultimately self-defeating ways for Elbegdorj's victory to be MPRP's defeat. Time will tell.Brian White, ACMS US Directorhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05016084281639282851noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-947416764841561265.post-29791222680998769382009-05-25T18:36:55.436-07:002009-05-25T18:36:55.436-07:00Great read as always Brian!

On the one hand, the MPRP suffered a loss, like the Republicans. But on the other, the pressure is now all on the Democrats, on both continents, to do right by the people.

Certainly, the parallel only goes so far. Enkhbayar (I don't think) wasn't as unpopular as Bush the Younger, and the MPRP still has a plurality (right?) in the Ikh Khural. But still, as you indicated, Elbegdorj just might have gotten more of the "Obama/Change" package than he expected.Christianhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02496574132223564263noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-947416764841561265.post-40739941682669469542009-05-23T10:59:57.019-07:002009-05-23T10:59:57.019-07:00I also look forward to the publication of the upda...I also look forward to the publication of the updated version of this dictionary. Maybe I dismiss it way too easily, but my intuition tells me that wind is not strong enough to erode that kind of rock. It was not sandstone, but more like concrete. Moreover, it seems somewhat weird that eddies would form often enough in one spot to bore holes into the rock over presumably many, many years.

But, it would make it even more intriguing if in fact wind can have such an erosive effect and eddies and vortexes form often and consistently enough to actually bore through rock over time. It would make the place that much more amazing to me for sure.Brian White, ACMS US Directorhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05016084281639282851noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-947416764841561265.post-6580683714984482712009-05-19T15:04:31.905-07:002009-05-19T15:04:31.905-07:00I am not a geologist either, but since it is in th...I am not a geologist either, but since it is in the Gobi I would guess that wind erosion could be the cause.Laurel Fanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18308082795213864274noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-947416764841561265.post-22116663394532497582009-05-19T02:45:00.000-07:002009-05-19T02:45:00.000-07:00Thanks for your interest in the blog.
